Donger,
The 6 month visas are free now. Weigh it against the cost of having to go out of the country for a new one. A retirement visa would be better than this one as far as hoops to run through, but if you plan on going to The Shit every few months, then this visa would be just as good and CHEAPER for the next year, at least. To do this, you apply for a TOURIST visa, and at the top of the application, under TOURIST VISA write in DOUBLE ENTRY. And if you do not go to the Thai consulate in person, write them a note stating that you want double entry. The visa process should take less than one week if you do the tourist visa. Dude, check out this website: www.khumsiphaya.com It is the place I was talking about with the nice lobby, alot of old geezers living there. It looks like a VERY comfortable place. Might be good if you are coming here just short term. But a little far from most things, so would need a motorbike or have to take 50 baht tuk tuk rides or walk.

The prices listed here are the reason it is good to have a retirement visa!.

Of course, you can make a visa run to Myanmar for less than 1,000 baht. But if you need to go out of the country for real, it is very expensive.
Dear Dr.

Hi

Regarding to your inquiry about flight tickets CNX - SGN and CNX - REP
We are pleased in quoting you the airfares as follow:

Looks like Vientiene is thecheapest place to go

The quote for Vientiene is listed below my explanation here. CNX - VTE 11,590 THB

Maybe I should clarify the visa shit.
With a 6 month tourist visa (2 separate entries of 2 months duration each, to be used in a 6 month time frame) you do NOT actually have to leave the country to activate the 2nd entry. You can go to the local immigration office (one here in CM and probably in Pattaya, Phuket, etc.) and pay 1900 baht and they can give you the new visa. To get a NEW 6 month tourist visa, you must go OUTSIDE of the country and apply at a Thai consulate in that country. I went to Vientiene to get mine. It was painless but took some time as it is the most convenient place for renewal for those living the northeast and extending to Bangkok. I have heard of having to wait several hours in lines. I did not have to wait more than 30 minutes to apply, and then 30 more minutes when picking up the passport. It is also expensive as you must stay 2 nights due to arrival and departure times of the flights. So at least 2 nights hotel, and then food, which is not so cheap there as you might think. The other alternative is to go to Mae Sai, which is at the Burma border. It costs less than 1,000 baht to do that. Just basically cross the border, pay the Burmese $10 USD, turn around and get the new visa at the Thai checkpoint. You don't really get 2 visas, you have one paper visa in your passport. The first time you enter using the visa, they write on the face of the visa (1) and the date of entry, then also write (2) and leave it blank. The second time you enter, they write the date by the (2) and just give you a new paper visa form and staple it in your passport. They also stamp the passport and place a date of expiration on the new visa. So, where you go and what you do depends on your visa type, if it is expiring, and if you just want to get out of town and experience something new but at an added cost.
All for now, DUDE!

Re: best times to be in Chiang Mai and Thailand

Depends on what you want. Cool and clear would be December and January, part of February.

Best weather as far as good air is June-November.

Not too hot as long as it is raining, but rains most days.

I would spend April and August in the USA. Rainy season in Chiang Mai (June-November) and the rest of the time near the beach or on Samui or Phuket.

There are houses for rent for 15,000 baht, and probably less, on Samui. Maybe a little ways from the beach but still good locations.
Now, the reason I am in BKK and going to Samui soon is because of the pollution in Chiang Mai I would now NOT recommend CM as a place to live, especially for you with your breathing problems. The pollution is year around and getting worse..................

I think Khon Kaen, Pattaya, Phuket, Hua Hin....

any of the larger provincial towns that are not huge would be better. Carlo mentioned the price of doing visa runs. I am paying the price now I will fly to Vientiene (flying so I can claim VAT for my 2 computers) and must stay 3 nights. So, even if taking a bus it costs $100, then apply for the visa, pay for the visa to go to the other country, p ay for the hotel, pay for massage...

it all adds up. this trip will cost me more than $500 due to airticket $200, nicer hotel $50 per night, and must stay 3 nights due to the connection times not working well with getting the visa process done. so, expensive. ..............

.......... Go to this site

and there might be info on insurance (http://www.chiangmaiexpatsclub.com/index.asp). If there is some info, please let me know The Expats club meets two times a month. I went last weekend when the US Consular General spoke for about an hour. Pretty informative. The group is probably 50% americans and 50% other nationalities. I think it can be a good resource for us in the future. I have underutilized it because I think there are alot of dickheads in the group. But because of my prejudice, which is unfounded since I have only met a few of the people there, I have missed out on alot of opportunities. They have many Outside Group Activities that look like fun. Eating out, photography, things like that] Anyhow, take a look ..........

.......... earlier this week my friend Bill, dentist from Laguna, aged about 65, was pulled OFF HIS MOTORBIKE while DRIVING DOWN THE STREET! This occurred at about 10pm, on the road in front of the Thai Airways office (for Donger's benefit, this is a main road, pretty well lit, light traffic at night but still frequently travelled). His girlfriend also was pulled to the ground. Not sure what was taken, but probably her purse. Bill said he was stunned and could not move for about 5 minutes. This guy is 65, but very very fit. Later in the week he complained of still having pain in his back, and turns out he cracked one of his vertebrae. this is the 2nd personal friend that has been attacked like this in the last 3 months. They caught one gang of kids a month or so ago, but still must be happening regulary. My Honey said a young girl that lives in the same neighborhood as my Honey was KILLED recently in a robbery. ..........
